Spotify songs greyed out or not available: why it happens and how to fix it

A greyed-out song on Spotify can't be played, and Spotify usually skips it. Most of the time it's a setting or your connection, which you can fix in a minute. Sometimes the song isn't available where you are, or it has been taken down, and only the artist's label or distributor can change that.

Short answer

Spotify songs are greyed out when they aren't available in your country, when you're in offline mode and haven't downloaded them, when the explicit content filter is on, or when you've hidden them in that playlist. Check those settings first. If the song is still grey, it's down to the rights holders. Spotify says what it has varies over time and between countries, so the song may come back.

What to do, in order

  1. Turn off offline mode

Anything you haven't downloaded is greyed out while Spotify is offline. On mobile, go to Settings and privacy, then Data-saving and offline. On desktop, it's in the Spotify menu on a Mac or the File menu on Windows.

  2. Check the explicit filter

With the filter on, anything with an explicit tag is greyed out and skipped. Turn on Allow Explicit Content in Settings and privacy, or Allow playback of explicit-rated content on desktop. On Premium Family, the plan manager can block it for your account.

  3. Unhide the song

A song you hid in a playlist is greyed out and skipped there, but plays everywhere else. On mobile, tap the three dots and choose Show in this playlist. On desktop, click the Remove icon next to it again.

  4. Check your connection and country

Check your network, or switch to another one. If you've moved, update your account country and payment method to match where you live.

  5. Try another device

Play it on the web player or another device. If it works there, update the app, clear its cache or reinstall it.

  6. Search for it again

If it's still grey, search for the song. A removed track can still open from an old link, greyed out, while another version may be available in your country.

What "not available" means

Spotify says it doesn't have all the world's music, and what it does have varies over time and between countries. That depends on permissions from rights holders, usually the artist's label or distributor.

Spotify also adds new content every day, so a song you can't play now may appear, or reappear, later.

If it's your own song that's greyed out

If your song went grey and you didn't ask for that, contact your distributor first. Spotify says your label or distributor will have more information. Reasons it lists include a takedown, a delete or end date in the delivery, and missing track-level rights.

If a takedown went out by mistake, your distributor can send an update that restores the rights. Spotify says the music should then be live within 2 business days.

  • Send the Spotify link, the song title and its ISRC.
  • Say when you last saw it play.
  • Add a screenshot of the greyed-out song.
  • Ask one question: why it was removed, and what they need from you to restore it.

How Traxure helps

Listeners can't do much about a song that was taken down, but the artist can if they find out quickly. Traxure runs a full check of all 12 platforms every 24 hours. If a release goes missing on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Deezer, TIDAL, SoundCloud or Pandora, it emails you what changed, with a note to your distributor ready to send. Monitoring starts with a seven-day free trial.

Questions artists ask

Why are some songs greyed out on Spotify?

Usually the song isn't available in your country, you're in offline mode without it downloaded, the explicit filter is on, or you hid it in that playlist.

What does "not available" mean on Spotify?

The song can't be played for you right now. Spotify says what it has varies over time and between countries, depending on permissions from rights holders, so it may come back.

Why are songs greyed out in one playlist but play elsewhere?

You probably hid them in that playlist. Hidden songs are greyed out and skipped there, but still play in other playlists.

Why are all my songs greyed out?

Usually offline mode or a lost connection. While Spotify is offline, anything you haven't downloaded is greyed out.

Can I play a greyed-out song?

Only if you can fix the cause on your side, such as offline mode, the explicit filter or a hidden song. If it isn't available in your country or was taken down, you can't play that version.

My own song is greyed out. Who do I contact?

Your distributor or label. Spotify says they'll have more information, and they're the ones who can send the update that brings it back.
